Southwest of Nairn, Cawdor Castle is a historic turreted tower house built over 600 years ago which still belongs to the Cawdor family today and shares its name with the castle in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. It’s said that the castle was built around a holly tree, and there is indeed still a tree that you can still see deep in the dungeon, which dates from 1372. There are also sumptuous rooms, gorgeous gardens and a large estate which is home to a golf course, nature trails and fishing beats.
