HMS Shearwater Monument

The Coig - The Cumbrae

This simple stone monument stands guard over some of the best views of the island - but also commemorates a tragic tale. Erected by the officers of the Royal Navy wooden paddle steamer HMS Shearwater, the monument memorialises two young midshipmen who drowned in the bay in 1844.
